BETHEL — A 46-year-old Monroe man was arrested Tuesday evening after the car he was driving allegedly hit a utility pole, causing it to snap in half and onto Route 53.
According to police, officers were sent to Route 53 at about 8:13 p.m. Tuesday for a motor vehicle accident.
During the investigation it was determined that the driver of the vehicle, Timothy Brown, of Bagburn Road, was traveling southbound, police said, when he bent over to locate a ringing cell phone.
According to police, Brown’s vehicle veered off the road and «struck a utility pole which snapped and fell along with wires before striking a traffic sign and causing lawn damage to a residence.»
Brown was given a series of field sobriety tests, which according to police, he failed.
Brown was arrested at about 8:44 p.m. and charged with operating under the influence, unsafe movement of a vehicle and distracted driving.
He was released after posting $1,000 bond and is scheduled to appear in State Superior Court in Danbury at 10 a.m. on April 15.
